                                                         SOLUTIONS ( part 1)

SOLUTION :   It is the mixture of two or more pure substances

                         or it is the homogeneous mixture of two or more components.

                          lesser amount = solute

                           larger amount= solvent

EXPRESSING CONCENTRATION OF SOLUTIONS

  • Qualitatively-  Dilute and Concentrated                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Quantitavely-
               mass%  (w/w)  = mass of the component in solution /Total mass of the solution *100

              volume%(v/v)= Volume of the component/Total volume of the solution * 100

             Mass by Volume % (m/v) = Mass of solute dissolved/ 100ml of Solution

             Part per million (ppm) = No. of parts of component/ Total no. of parts of solution * 10 ^6
                 ( This is used to determine pollution and when solute is present in trace amounts)

            Mole fraction ( X) = No. of moles of component / Total no. of moles of component

                              Xa = Na/ Na+Nb

            MOLARITY= Number of miles of solute per liter of solution.

                         M= No of moles of solute / Volume of Solution(L)

            MOLALITY= Number of moles of solute per kg of solvent

                         m= No. of moles of solute / weight of solvent (kg)
